PARENTS:

ACT 3: STAYING IN THE LOOP! Communicating with school officials! 1. Initiate contact with teacher(s) within the first month of the school year. Also meet/interact with other school staff including the principal, guidance counselor, secretary, 2. Interact with teacher(s) using on or more of the following strategies: parent/teacher communication resource, email, face to face meetings, phone calls, personal notes. Do this at least once a month to check on current positive/negative grades and behavior, troubling areas to address, and current/upcoming academic focus areas. 3. Ask about specific school programs based on your child’s talents, strengths, and interest such as social and leadership groups, sports, band or any other extra curricular activities. Remember, surrounding your child with positive people and activities is the ultimate way to keep them out of trouble. ACT 4: ADVOCATING WITH VOICE! 1. Join school organizations, advocacy groups and community leadership initiatives. Be part of decision making processes. SPEAAK Up! 2. Present and convey school/community concerns to school teachers, administration, school board public officials, and community leaders. Be part of decision making processes. SPEAAK Up! 3. Attend board meetings, town hall meetings, and community forums. Be part of decision making processes. SPEAAK Up! ACT 5: REACHING AND TEACHING! 1. Help at least one child/parent/family: relatives, friends, peers, person in need. Assistance m ay include but not limited to: childcare, tutoring, transportation, guidance, share information/resources or a listening ear. 2. Assist teacher with needed resources, classroom tasks, and snacks. ACT 6: TAKING CARE OF COMMUNITY! 1. Participate in positive social causes in the community. 2. Donate food, clothes, toys, and unwanted items to needed persons, thrift shops, churches or whomever appropriate. ACT 7: COUNT YOURSELF IN! 1. Whatever/Whoever helps you to release stress, go for it! 2. Have some fun and laugh!
